The Data That Drive Detroit
February 14, 2013
This year’s upcoming municipal election will be the first time in nearly 100 years that Detroiters will elect the city council from defined districts. Historically, Detroit’s nine City Council members have been elected at-large with each of them representing the city as a whole rather than a particular district. However, with the passing of Detroit’s new City Charter, which took effect on January 1, 2012, only two members are elected at-large, and seven members are elected by district. Use our new interactive tool to explore the districts.

The Metropolitan Opportunity Unit at the Ford Foundation is supporting innovative local and national organizations that are engaged in cross-sector development and advocacy efforts to connect people to economic opportunity, expand access to quality housing, and promote innovative metropolitan land use. By concentrating its efforts in Detroit and other key metropolitan areas, and by expanding and deepening the work of local and national organizations, researchers, and advocates, the Metropolitan Opportunity Unit is leveraging Foundation resources to expand the scale and scope of successful initiatives to promote thriving, equitable, and sustainable metropolitan regions. The Unit also seeks to influence the public and private investments, policies, and systems needed to sustain these efforts over time.
With so much attention focused on the City of Detroit, it is extremely beneficial to have attention directed to the metropolitan context within which the city operates. The Detroit Profile that has just been produced by NeighborWorks America provides a terrific accounting of the work of local Ford Foundation grantees within the data context of the metropolitan area. We invite you to benefit from the work by browsing through the report and associated content.
