Supporting Wayne and Macomb County Great Start Collaboratives

D3 is working with the Great Start Collaborative-Wayne to investigate methods of improving data and information delivery across the country. D3 also worked with the Great Start Collaborative-Wayne to develop their 2009 Report Card to the Community. The report begins with a general overview of demographic, socioeconomic, and economic trends in the county. What follows is a county-wide assessment of available data in each of the five key areas identified by the Great Start Collaborative-Wayne, including:

  • Basic Needs, Economic Security & Child Safety – Families of infants and children are economically stable.  Infants and young children live in safe families.
  • Early Care & Education – Children are ready to succeed in school and in life.
  • Parenting Education and Family Support – Families support and guide the early learning of their infants and young children.
  • Physical Health Care – Infants, young children and their families are physically healthy.
  • Social-Emotional Health Care – Infants, young children and their families are socially and emotionally healthy.

In addition, due to the size and complexity of Wayne County, the Collaborative decided to divide it into quarters and present four sub-county summary reports, highlighting those variables for which sub-county data were available. The Detroit section addresses the complexity of the city by reporting selectively on its 10 planning clusters.

The 2010 “How are the Children?” report is now available.  Also available are profiles of four regions within Wayne County: Detroit, Downriver, Eastern, and Western.

In February 2005, Governor Granholm approved the formation of a new non-profit public corporation to coordinate state and local efforts to promote early childhood development activities in Michigan.  Thor corporation - known as the Michigan Early Childhood Investment Corporation (ECIC) - was created to establish standards and guidelines for early childhood development activities to be implemented throughout the state by the ECIC in partnership with local intermediate school districts (ISDs).
