Overview
Data Driven Detroit (D3) is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic individual or firm to serve as a Contract Web Developer.
Location: Remote
Payment: Hourly rate, based on experience, not to exceed $65,000 in total
This is a contractual role. We expect the initial term of the contract to be for a duration of 8 months, with potential for contract extension beyond this point contingent on performance and continued funding to support the position. Individuals and firms with a presence or experience working in Metro Detroit are strongly preferred.
We expect the contract to begin in October or November 2024, and end June 30, 2025.

Founded in 2009, Data Driven Detroit (D3) is a low-profit, worker-owned social enterprise pursuing our mission of providing accessible, high-quality analysis to drive informed decision-making.

At D3, we work every day to improve access to information for everyone in Metro Detroit. Across a variety of projects, we work to turn complex datasets into accessible, user-friendly tools that help people gain valuable insights and learn more about important topics. Our efforts are led by our analytical team, who collaborate on a variety of projects to answer our partners’ questions. This team has diverse skillsets, that range from programming databases to conducting quantitative analysis.
Currently, we deliver custom solutions tailored to each project, but this contract is designed to augment our front-end design capabilities. We are looking for a partner who can support us in creating more efficient, visually appealing websites and develop reusable code that will allow our team to build these sites faster and more efficiently.
Anticipated Scope of Services
The selected individual or firm will work with the D3 analytical team to:
- Develop, test, and deploy custom websites and web applications that translate complex data into user-friendly, visual formats
- Create JavaScript-based data visualizations, interactive dashboards, and other front-end components.
- Collaborate with data analysts to design web solutions that can be easily maintained by non-web developers.
- Write clean, modular, and well-documented JavaScript code.
- Integrate back-end APIs (primarily written in Python) with front-end data displays.
- Work with PostgreSQL databases to fetch, manage, and display data.
- Build and expand a custom JavaScript visualization library and front-end framework for our projects.
- Develop mapping solutions and other visual representations of geospatial data.
- Ensure cross-browser and mobile compatibility for all web applications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to web applications and data integration.
Qualifications
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment
- 5 years of experience in web development
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript, with a focus on building data-driven visualizations and user interfaces.
- Experience in developing custom visualization libraries
- Experience with front-end frameworks.
- Understanding of Python and the ability to collaborate on API development.
- Ability to write maintainable and well-documented code that can be supported by Python developers without web development experience
- Experience working with geospatial data and building interactive maps.
- Familiarity with data analysis concepts and how data is processed for visualization.

Provisions

- D3 retains the right to reject any and all submissions, and to make any award deemed to be in the best interest of D3.
