Child population:
American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates
- The American Community Survey is administered by the Census Bureau to a sample of the U.S. population each year, and is used to produce estimates of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics across the country. Estimates for large geographies (populations above 65,000) are produced annually.
Child poverty:
American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates
- This indicator uses federal poverty guidelines, and refers to the number of children living in households that earn incomes below the federal poverty level.
Third grade reading level:
Data Driven Detroit analysis of MI School Data public data files
- The English Language Arts (ELA) assessment is not a direct assessment of students’ reading proficiency, but rather their proficiency across various English Language Arts skills. There is no statewide reading proficiency measure in Michigan, but ELA provides a close estimate.
- The State of Michigan redacts data when fewer than 10 students fall into a specific category to maintain privacy. In order to better understand overall trends, values for these schools have been estimated based on other publicly available information, and may not always match numbers that are published by the State or other organizations that have access to individual-level data.
- This information includes all students from public schools located in Detroit (Detroit Public Schools Community District as well as charter schools).
Prenatal care:
Michigan League for Public Policy analysis of Michigan Department of Community Health, Division of Vital Records and Health Statistics, CDC/National Center for Health Statistics
- Adequacy of prenatal care is based on the Kessner Index, which measures adequacy by the month the care began, number of prenatal visits, and length of the pregnancy. Prenatal care is adequate when it begins in the first trimester and includes, on average, at least one or two additional prenatal care visits per month, depending on the length of gestation.
- This indicator is a three-year average percent of live births with less than adequate prenatal care.
Born too early:
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, CDC/National Center for Health Statistics
- Infants born prior to 37 weeks of completed gestation.
Born too small:
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, CDC/National Center for Health Statistics
- Includes low (less than 2,500 grams) and very low (less than 1,500 grams) birthweight babies.
Infant mortality:
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, CDC/National Center for Health Statistics
- The infant death rate is the number of resident infant deaths (deaths occurring to individuals less than one year of age) divided by total resident live births x 1,000.
