The Detroit Data Coalition (which D3 is a member of) is an informal group of organizations committed to sharing data and utilizing data efficiently to improve the quality of life for those who live, work, and play in Detroit. In June 2023 the Data Coalition announced a data visualization competition to highlight the data available by coalition partners:
- City of Detroit Open Data Portal
- Downtown Detroit Partnership
- Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) Data and Maps
- Data Driven Detroit Toolbox
- Detroit Bureau
The entries were judged by the Data Coalition members and partners DETROITography, Detroit Collaborative Design Center, and Design Core Detroit, and were announced on November 15th in conjunction with Detroit GIS Day.
The data artists in this exhibit come from all walks of life and their experiences and skills are diverse. Each one of them brought their life experience into their passion for data visualization, and their love for the City of Detroit. Their task was to create art based on the insights of datasets from the Detroit Data Coalition and their partners.
The judges had a tough job selecting the five finalists (by alphabetical order):
- Erin Butler: Gentrification and Surveillance in Detroit
- Sophia Casab: Detroit: An Intricate Dance of Urban Life
- Joanne Coutts: Mapping the Detroit’s Buried Waterways Project
- Kerrel Spivey: Detroit’s Commercial Growth and Success
- Angelina Tran: Neighborhood Enterprise Zones and Homestead Edugraphic
Check out their workon this storymap created by the Open Data Team at the City of Detroit’s Department of Innovation and Technology.
There were also two Honorable Mentions to check out:
- Sandon Lettieri: Debunking Homicide Stereotypes in Detroit
- Connor Miller: Detroit’s Vibrant Food Scene
If you missed your opportunity to compete in 2023, the Data Coalition plans to hold it again in the future. Watch our social media or subscribe to our newsletter to find out when the next competition begins!
