Meet the D3 Staff: Danielle Taylor-Basemore

Headshot of Ben Williams

Where did you grow up?

I am a DetroitER, born and raised. I grew up on the east side of Detroit and I still reside there.

What is your degree in? Why did you choose that degree?

I have a B.A in Communications and Media and a minor in Digital Studies. I knew that I wanted my career to have technology at the epicenter, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do specifically so I kept my studies broad and explored a lot of different subjects. At the time, I was upset because I felt as though I should know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life (which is silly!), but ultimately I am glad that my foundation is Communications because the skills I learned there are transferable to every sector.

Currently, I am in graduate school pursuing a M.S. in Data Analytics and Policy, concentrating in Statistical Analysis.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

Something that always surprises people is my sense of style. I enjoy vibrant colors and I have a good amount of piercings. Despite this, I also enjoy video games, embroidery, and DIY construction projects.

What is your history with Detroit?

I would say my history is Detroit. Having lived in the city all of my life and working here, my history is intertwined with that of the city.

What did you do before working at D3?

Before working at D3, I worked for various nonprofit organizations throughout Michigan with the mission of creating a better place for us all to live.

What do you like about working at D3 so far?

Working at D3, I’ve already learned so much and seen its impact.

What are your favorite types of data?

My favorite type of data is spatial/geographic data, specifically choropleth maps.

Who or what inspired you to take the path to Detroit, data, or both?

I was inspired to take the path to data due to a canvassing project that I participated in as a Community Tech Consultant for the University of Michigan and Jefferson East, Inc.
